6 Steps To Removal Pool Algae

Make sure to start by first testing your water and balancing the chemical levels in the pool. This can be done by using a basic 2-way solution, or 4-way solution water test kit. There are 6-way solution kits on the market, but most people won’t need those. We want to test for four basic levels; alkalinity, chlorine, pH and calcium hardness.

Step 1

Start the pump and let run a few moments before testing the water. You want to test for alkalinity (measured in ppm), free chlorine, pH levels, and calcium hardness (measured in ppm)

Step 2

Per manufacturing instructions, add pool shock to pool to remove contaminants from the water.

Step 3

Using a high-quality pool scrubbing brush, concentrate effort to remove algae from pool tiles, and pool walls. In some cases, you may need to drain the pool to scrub the pool floor to ensure that all pool algae and debris is removed from your swimming pool.

Step 4

Apply a safe rated algaecide to the pool and let circulate, with pool pump on, for at least 24 hours before retouching with pool brush. Using a wet/dry vacuum, remove the leftover algae and wipe down pool tile with chemical free cloths.

Step 5

Using a basic test kit, test and balance your swimming pool again. Check water levels for the optimum range for alkalinity, chlorine, pH and calcium hardness. Click here to learn more about pH levels and water balancing.

Get the family together, and dive in! Now that the hard work is over, it’s time to have fun!
